***ALERT***

Strawberries & Leaf Lettuce

Strawberries (current harvests are from California) are experiencing major quality issues resulting in bruised and soft berries. These quality issues are due to the unusually high amount of rain in the berry-growing regions of California.

In addition to extensive rain the area. California has also been experiencing fog that is not burning off until early afternoon, making the harvesting hours shorter than normal. All of this additional moisture makes the berries bruise easily, damage easily, and unable to tolerate packaging and shipment as normal. The quality of all strawberries is being classified as average to poor regardless of the brand.

The heavy rains in California are also affecting the quality of leaf lettuces.  The current quality issues are mildew, misshapen heads and light color.  Expect to see wind burn, tip burn, and some wild tops. There is not only limited quality of iceberg and romaine lettuces, but also higher market prices.

At this time, Native Maine cannot guarantee strawberries or leaf lettuces for quality.  Please check these products in carefully at the time of delivery as they cannot be returned for credit at a later date.

If you have any questions, please contact your area representative.  Thanks for choosing Native Maine; we promise to keep searching for the best possible fresh produce grown in America.
